Asklepieion in Kos

The Asklepieion in Kos, Dodecanese: The Asklepieion is an ancient medical centre placed 4 km to the south east of Kos Town, beyond Platani village. It dates from the first half of the 3rd century BC and it was built to honour the god of health and medicine, Asklepios, after the death of the famous ancient Greek physician, Hippocrates.

The Castle of the Knights

The Castle of the Knights in Kos, Dodecanese: The castle of the Knights of Saint John on Kos, was constructed with local stone and with the remains of previous constructions and buildings. It still shows a number of blazons on the masonry, some columns, bases and architraves from the ruins of the old city. It was built during the occupation of the Knights, which lasted for over two hundred years.

The Roman Odeon

The Roman Odeon of Kos, Dodecanese: The ancient Odeon found at Kos was built by the Romans around the 2nd and the 3rd centuries. It was found in the early 20th century along with the Gymnasium and the Roman baths, all of them in general good condition. These constructions are placed on the east and west of the Casa Romana, which is part of the Ancient Town and its several excavation areas.

Casa Romana

Casa Romana, which means the Roman House, is an important excavation area. This house shows the architectural style that dominated on the island in the Hellenistic and the Roman Times. It is a beautiful mansion with a style similar to the buildings found in Pompeii. It dates from the 2nd century and was built on the ruins of another house of the Hellenistic period.

The plane tree of Hippocrates

The plane tree of Hippocrates in Kos, Dodecanese: In the centre of Kos island in front of the Castle of Knights stands a huge old plane tree, known as the Hippocrates plane tree. It is claimed that Hippocrates used to sit under this plane tree and teach his students. As the tree is 500 years old, it is obviously not the one that Hippocrates planted, since he lived around the 5th century BC.

The Castle of Antimachia

The Castle of Antimachia in Kos: On a small hill above Antimachia village, to the south of Kos Town lies the Venetian Castle, known as the Castle of Antimachia. Its was built in the early 14th century by the Order of the Knights of Saint John but works were intensified in the end of the 15th century, particularly in 1494 as it can be seen at the inscription above the main gate.

Zia Village Kos

This small beautiful village is located 16 km southeast of Kos town and close to Asfendiou village at a high altitude in the mountain side of Dikeos. Zia lies hidden among the lush green forests and running waters and is regarded as a pole of attraction for many visitors, tourists and Greek tourists. Its idyllic location on the slopes of Mountain Dikeos offers some breathtaking views to the entire Kos island.

Antimachia Village Kos

Antimachia is a traditional village which lies on a plateau 23 km south of Kos town near the airport. The village distinguishes for its picturesque neighbourhoods, the traditional houses and the enchanting landscape. Antimachia is famous for the musical and dancing tradition. Today, many locals have built their country houses here, away from the busy crowds of the town.
